Speeding bus driver dies in Sagamu–Benin Expressway accident

Fatal Crash Claims Life on Busy Sagamu-Benin Expressway

Ogun State, Nigeria – A tragic accident on the ever-busy Sagamu-Benin Expressway has left one person dead and two others injured, casting a pall over the weekend. The incident, which occurred on Saturday around 5:20 p.m. near the Ijebu-Ode Express Trailer Park, has been attributed to the dreaded culture of excessive speeding.

The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) confirmed the crash, stating it involved a container-laden truck with registration number KTU 357 XX and a white bus marked DGB 650 XA.

Preliminary investigations by TRACE officials revealed that the driver of the white bus was driving at a high speed when he lost control of the vehicle. Eyewitnesses reported that the speeding bus rammed into the stationary truck, which was attempting to join the expressway from the trailer park. The impact was fatal for the bus driver, who died instantly on the spot.

A total of five people were involved in the crash. The two passengers in the bus sustained minor injuries and were promptly rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. The two individuals in the truck were reported to have escaped unharmed.

The crash caused significant traffic gridlock along the expressway, disrupting the journeys of many motorists. A combined team of TRACE, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and Police operatives swiftly moved to the scene. They successfully evacuated the deceased to the Ijebu-Ode General Hospital mortuary, cleared the wreckage from the road, and restored normal traffic flow.

The vehicles have been towed to the Ijebu-Ode Police Area Command in Igbeba for further investigation. TRACE has once again advised motorists to shun speeding and adhere to road safety regulations to prevent such avoidable tragedies.
