Players of Rivers United have received a cash reward of $5,000 following their qualification for the money-spinning group stage of the CAF Champions League.
The Rivers State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Barrister Chris Green, made the announcement after the team’s impressive 3-1 victory over Mozambican side, Black Bulls, in the second leg of their second-round tie on Saturday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.
The win saw Rivers United progress 3-2 on aggregate, earning them a historic place in the competition’s group stage for the first time in the club’s history.
Goals from Wasiu Falolu, Maclyn Biokpo, and Timothy Zacharia sealed the result for Finidi George’s men, while Moctar Diallo scored the only goal for the visitors two minutes after the restart.
Barrister Green commended the players for their determination and resilience, describing their qualification as a “moment of pride” for Rivers State and Nigerian football as a whole.
“This is a big achievement for Rivers United and for Nigeria. The state government is proud of your performance, and this reward is a token of appreciation for your hard work,” Green said.
The Pride of Rivers will now shift focus to preparing for the group stage, where they will face some of Africa’s elite clubs.
