Aisha Yesufu, has called for the dismantling of every societal barrier preventing Nigerian women from reaching their full potential and occupying key leadership positions — including the Presidency.
Speaking as the keynote speaker at the Girls Summit organised by Protect the Precious Foundation in Umuahia, Abia State, on Friday, Yesufu decried the persistent bias and discrimination against women in politics and leadership.
She noted that while men are rarely questioned about their suitability for leadership, women are constantly judged and undermined once they show interest in running for political office.
“No matter how bad a man is, nobody says he can’t be President. But the moment a woman is running, she will be told a woman can’t be President,” she said.
Aisha Yesufu further emphasized that women have been denied the opportunity to ‘own their space’, despite their capability, intelligence, and contribution to nation-building. She urged society to support women’s aspirations rather than suppress them.
Commending the Lead Person of Protect the Precious Foundation, Norah Okafor, for her continuous advocacy for girls’ rights, Yesufu also appealed to the Federal Government to abolish harmful practices against widows and ensure women enjoy full social protection.
Representing the wife of the Abia State Governor, Priscilla Chidinma Otti, the wife of the Deputy Governor, Adaeze Emetu, reaffirmed that the Governor’s wife’s office remains committed to championing the rights of girls, widows, and other vulnerable groups in the state.
In her address, Norah Okafor encouraged girls to speak up against abuse and threats, assuring that her organisation will always amplify their voices and provide platforms for empowerment and safety.
