A team of scientists in China has unveiled a medical breakthrough that could change orthopedic treatment forever — a bone glue capable of healing fractures in minutes instead of months.
The product, known as Bone-02, was developed to drastically reduce the need for invasive surgeries involving metal plates and screws.
According to Dr. Lin Xianfeng, Associate Chief Orthopedic Surgeon at Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital in Hangzhou, the adhesive works effectively even in blood-rich environments and can repair shattered bones within three minutes using just a single injection.
In one trial, a patient with a wrist fracture was treated through a small incision. Instead of metal plates and screws, Bone-02 was used, and the bone healed within minutes. Three months later, doctors confirmed the patient had fully recovered without any complications.
Researchers drew inspiration from oysters, which produce natural glue strong enough to stick underwater. Similarly, Bone-02 creates erosion-resistant bonds and has been tested to withstand forces of over 400 pounds.
Unlike traditional implants, the glue is absorbed by the body during the healing process, eliminating the need for follow-up surgeries. Early findings also suggest the treatment carries fewer risks of infection compared to conventional metal-based methods.
Experts believe Bone-02 could revolutionize bone fracture treatment worldwide if clinical trials continue to deliver positive results.
