Fresh political tension is brewing ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections as former All Progressives Congress (APC) Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Timi Frank, has alleged a new plot to remove the African Democratic Congress (ADC) from the election ballot. He warned that any attempt to sideline the opposition party could trigger widespread political unrest and undermine the country’s democracy.
In a strongly worded statement, Frank claimed there were moves to use the judiciary and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to prevent the ADC and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, from participating in the 2027 elections. He alleged that the opposition party had become the primary target of political forces determined to retain power.
According to Frank, excluding the ADC from the ballot would not only provoke resistance from Nigerians but also damage the country’s democratic reputation before the international community. He urged citizens to remain vigilant and closely monitor what he described as a dangerous pattern capable of weakening opposition politics.
The former APC spokesman further appealed to the international community, particularly the United States, to pay close attention to Nigeria’s political developments and support efforts to safeguard democratic principles. He also cautioned both INEC and the judiciary against actions that could compromise public confidence in the electoral process.
Frank alleged that individuals within the current administration were orchestrating efforts to suppress opposition parties through state institutions, warning that history would judge anyone who participated in actions capable of undermining democracy. However, he did not provide evidence to substantiate the claims.
The latest allegations come shortly after Atiku Abubakar also raised concerns about an alleged plot to keep the ADC off the ballot. They also follow a Federal High Court ruling in Lokoja that set aside an earlier judgment directing INEC to register the ADC, a case that has further intensified political debate ahead of the 2027 elections.
With political temperatures rising, attention is now shifting to how electoral authorities, the courts, and political stakeholders will respond as preparations for one of Nigeria’s most anticipated elections gather momentum.
