As political preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum, a fresh controversy has emerged following explosive allegations made by Nollywood actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo against the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Okonkwo claimed that an aspirant who participated in the NDC primary process contacted him with what he described as evidence of alleged irregularities and bribery linked to the party’s candidate selection process.

According to Okonkwo, the aspirant, identified as Obunike Ohaegbu, who sought to contest for the Nnewi North and Nnewi South Federal Constituency seat in Anambra State, allegedly sent him an urgent message detailing concerns about how the primaries were conducted.

The ADC chieftain alleged that several aspirants were encouraged to purchase expression of interest forms with assurances that additional payments would only be required after securing nominations. However, he claimed that some aspirants were later asked to make substantial payments before the primary elections were concluded.

Okonkwo further alleged that the aspirant provided him with payment receipts, which he cited as evidence supporting his claims. He also accused party leaders in the South-East of being involved in decisions surrounding candidate selection, alleging that certain candidates were chosen outside the official primary process.

The former Labour Party spokesperson did not hold back in his criticism, arguing that the allegations raised serious questions about transparency and internal democracy within the party. He maintained that Nigerians deserved clarity on the issues raised by the aspirant.

The claims have already sparked reactions across political circles, with supporters and critics of the NDC debating the credibility of the allegations. As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from Peter Obi or the NDC leadership regarding the accusations.

With the 2027 elections approaching, political observers say such allegations could intensify scrutiny of party primaries and candidate selection processes across the country. Whether the claims are substantiated or challenged, the controversy has added another layer of intrigue to Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
