President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the immediate withdrawal of police officers attached to Very Important Persons (VIPs), instructing that they return to core policing duties nationwide.
In a statement issued by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, police authorities have been ordered to redeploy all officers currently assigned to VIP security. The directive was given during a security meeting held on Sunday with service chiefs, including leaders of the Army, Air Force, Police, and DSS.
Under the new arrangement, VIPs seeking protection must now request armed officers from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). The Presidency noted that many remote communities across the country suffer from an acute shortage of police officers, making effective protection of citizens difficult.
To strengthen manpower, President Tinubu also approved the recruitment of 30,000 new police personnel and ongoing upgrades of police training facilities in collaboration with state governments.
Sunday’s meeting was attended by top service chiefs such as Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, and DSS DG Tosin Adeola Ajayi.
