The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced plans to embark on an indefinite nationwide strike starting Friday, November 1, 2025, over the Federal Government’s failure to meet their long-standing demands.
This was disclosed in a statement released on Sunday by NARD President, Dr. Mohammad Suleiman, following the expiration of a 30-day ultimatum earlier issued to the government.
According to the statement, the decision was reached after an extraordinary five-hour meeting of the association’s National Executive Council (NEC) held on Saturday.
“The NEC has marshalled out minimum demands, strike monitoring directives, and ‘no work, no pay/no pay, no work’ resolutions needed for a successful execution of this action,” the statement read.
Dr. Suleiman explained that the strike became inevitable after several failed negotiations and unfulfilled promises from the government regarding issues affecting the welfare of resident doctors and the health sector at large.
“The NEC has unanimously directed us to declare a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike action to commence on Friday, 31st October 2025 at 11:59 p.m.,” he added.
The doctors’ grievances reportedly include non-payment of salary arrears, poor working conditions, inadequate hazard allowances, and lack of sufficient medical equipment in hospitals nationwide.
The association stated that unless the government swiftly meets their minimum demands, all resident doctors across the country will down tools indefinitely — a move likely to paralyze services in most public hospitals.
