Tinubu Arrives in Rome for High-Level Counter-Terrorism Summit

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has arrived in Rome, Italy, to participate in the Aqaba Process Heads of State and Government Meeting, a major international forum focused on tackling terrorism and security challenges across West Africa.

The Aqaba Process, launched by King Abdullah II of Jordan in 2015, is a joint counter-terrorism initiative co-chaired by Jordan and the Italian government. The meeting, scheduled to begin on October 14, will bring together African heads of state, senior military and intelligence officials, and representatives of international and regional organisations.

According to a statement released by the Presidency, the meeting will “address the evolving security challenges in West Africa,” including the spread of terrorist networks, the connection between terrorism and organised crime, and the growing overlap between Sahel-based terrorism and piracy in the Gulf of Guinea.

Participants are expected to exchange insights on the region’s security landscape and develop joint strategies to strengthen cross-border cooperation. The discussions will also focus on disrupting online radicalisation and terror recruitment networks, particularly those leveraging digital platforms for propaganda.

President Tinubu will also hold bilateral talks with other world leaders to explore joint measures for strengthening security, intelligence sharing, and defence cooperation across the subregion.

Accompanying him on the trip are Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu; Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru; National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu; and Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Mohammed Mohammed, among other top officials.
