Tension in Bauchi as Soldiers Kill Police Constable During Late-Night Clash

A tragic confrontation between soldiers of Operation Safe Haven, Jos, and a police patrol team in Bauchi metropolis has left one police constable dead, sparking outrage and renewed concerns about inter-agency conflict in Nigeria’s security system.

The incident occurred around 10:35 p.m. on Friday in the Bayan Gari area of Bauchi when a police patrol team led by Inspector Hussaini Samaila reportedly clashed with soldiers following an altercation. According to Bauchi State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Ahmed Wakil, the clash began after Constable Ukasha Muhammed was assaulted by two men in front of a hotel.

Police operatives swiftly intervened, arresting one of the suspects — identified as Private Usman Mubarak (23NA/84/5346) of the STF Operation Safe Haven. However, moments later, two other soldiers, Private Yakubu Yahuza and Private Godspower Gabriel, both partially dressed in uniform and armed, confronted the team and shot Constable Muhammed in the chest, killing him instantly before fleeing the scene.

The deceased officer was rushed to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, where he was confirmed dead. His remains have been deposited at the hospital mortuary, while the detained suspects are in police custody.

Wakil revealed that a homicide investigation team has been set up to ensure justice through a thorough and transparent process.

This incident comes barely months after a similar confrontation in Alkaleri, where a police officer shot a soldier at a checkpoint.
