Former Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, has denied claims that he betrayed Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, during the 2022 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential primaries.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Tambuwal emphasized that his decision to step down and back former Vice President Atiku Abubakar — a move that ultimately secured Atiku the PDP ticket — was not an act of betrayal against Wike.
Tambuwal insisted that Wike has always been his friend, noting that both men were aware of each other’s presidential ambitions at the time.
“If Atiku comes in here today and Wike comes in here and requests for my phone — my personal phone — I will give it to Wike because he is my friend,” Tambuwal said.
He explained further:
“I never betrayed Wike. My friend met me in the presidential convention. He gave me the indication that he would run and he knew that I was running. It’s not betrayal. Betrayal is when you have an understanding and you go against it.”
The former Speaker of the House of Representatives also dismissed narratives suggesting that his alliance with Atiku was a political ambush against Wike.
Meanwhile, critics within the PDP continue to accuse Wike of working against the party’s interests, with some party leaders alleging that the FCT Minister now acts as though “his word is law” in PDP affairs.
