Former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has warned that Nigeria’s stability and future development are in grave danger if the country fails to urgently address its deepening education crisis.
In a statement shared on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, Obi expressed concern that the country currently has over 24 million out-of-school children, describing the situation as a ticking time bomb that threatens national security and progress.
“With over 24 million children out of school, Nigeria holds 24 million reasons to fear what lies ahead,” Obi cautioned.
He stressed that no nation aspiring for meaningful development can afford to neglect the education of its youth, emphasizing that a country’s growth is directly tied to the strength of its human capital.
According to him, education remains the foundation of national progress, and Nigeria must urgently invest in its young citizens to secure its future.
Speaking on global innovation trends, Obi highlighted that the rapid rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping industries and workforces worldwide, making education a non-negotiable necessity.
“Education is no longer optional; it is essential for daily life. We must equip our young people with the knowledge and skills to compete globally — not just to survive, but to lead,” he stated.
The former governor’s remarks have sparked renewed conversations among education advocates and policymakers on the urgent need for systemic reform in Nigeria’s education sector.
