Nigeria @ 65: Governor Adeleke Grants Amnesty to 36 Prison Inmates in Osun

In commemoration of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary, Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has pardoned 36 convicts serving various jail terms across the two correctional centres in the state.

The governor, in his Independence Day message, said the decision was part of efforts to promote peace, justice, and a renewed sense of hope for citizens, especially those who have shown remorse and readiness to reintegrate into society.

According to official sources, the exercise aligns with constitutional powers vested in the governor to grant amnesty and exercise prerogative of mercy. The beneficiaries were carefully selected after thorough assessments by the state’s Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, ensuring only deserving inmates benefitted.

Governor Adeleke emphasized that the gesture was not an encouragement for crime, but rather an opportunity for reformation and a fresh start. He called on the pardoned convicts to live responsibly and contribute positively to nation-building.

While felicitating Nigerians on the country’s 65th Independence Anniversary, Adeleke reiterated his administration’s commitment to good governance, rule of law, and policies that enhance the welfare and security of the people.
