A Lagos-based couple, Fred and Goodness, have been arrested for allegedly faking their own kidnapping and extorting N10 million from family and friends. The incident reportedly took place on January 7, as part of a scheme to raise funds for the husband’s planned return to the United States after expected financial support failed to materialize.
Sources revealed that the couple contacted relatives and associates, claiming they had been abducted and demanding ransom. Families mobilized the money within three days, believing the couple was in danger.
The plot began unraveling when operatives monitoring the agreed ransom drop-off at a school in Cappa, Mushin noticed suspicious movements. The woman arrived alone, the husband followed separately, and both were later caught with the ransom money in a bag.
During questioning, the woman admitted participation in the scheme, and further investigations confirmed no kidnapping had occurred. Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Addebisi, stated that the couple would be charged in court after investigations conclude.
