Kano Businesses Suffer As KEDCO Strike Drags Into Third Day

Commercial activities across Kano have been badly hit as the ongoing strike by workers of the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) entered its third day, plunging Kano, Jigawa and Katsina states into darkness.

Traders in major business hubs, including Sharada Industrial Estate and Farm Centre Market, said the blackout has crippled operations and resulted in mounting losses. Many businesses now rely on generators, with operators lamenting the high cost of fuel and gas. Perishable goods sellers also reported losses due to lack of refrigeration.

Labour unions blamed the strike on unresolved welfare issues, accusing KEDCO management of failing to honour agreements on pension arrears, bonuses and staff appraisals. Union leaders also faulted management for setting performance targets without providing adequate working tools.

As negotiations remain stalled, residents and business owners fear worsening economic hardship if power supply is not restored soon.
