FG Releases ₦2.3bn for University Lecturers’ Salary and Promotion Arrears

The Federal Government has released ₦2.3 billion to clear the salary and promotion arrears of university lecturers across the country.

Confirming the development on Wednesday, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, said the payment demonstrates President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to addressing welfare and funding challenges in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.

According to a statement by Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press at the Federal Ministry of Education, the funds—processed through the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation—cover Batch 8 arrears for lecturers and other academic staff.

Dr. Alausa emphasized that the payment reflects the administration’s determination to clear inherited backlogs and improve the welfare of both academic and non-academic workers.

“A total of ₦2.311 billion, representing Batch 8 salary and promotion arrears, has been released through the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation to universities. Benefiting institutions should begin to receive payment alerts anytime from now,” Alausa stated.

He noted that the initiative aligns with the government’s ongoing engagements with ASUU and other tertiary unions to ensure lasting stability in the education sector.

Observers have described the move as a positive step toward restoring trust between the Federal Government and university workers after years of industrial disputes.

The ₦2.3 billion disbursement is expected to ease financial strain on staff while reinforcing the government’s promise to prioritize education and human capital development.
