The Senate’s passage of the Electoral Act amendment has sparked widespread backlash, with analysts warning that Nigeria’s democracy is under serious threat. Critics say rejecting mandatory real-time electronic transmission of election results could weaken public trust and devalue citizens’ votes.
Public affairs analyst, Mahdi Shehu, described the move as a direct assault on democracy, arguing that lawmakers have abandoned the mandate given to them by Nigerians. He warned that when votes no longer count, citizens may lose faith in the electoral process entirely.
Shehu further accused key democratic institutions of failing in their duties, alleging a collapse of checks and balances between the executive, legislature, and judiciary. He also claimed that the credibility of INEC is being questioned, raising concerns about transparency ahead of future elections.
Meanwhile, the NNPP in Kano State described the amendment as a calculated political strategy aimed at influencing the 2027 general elections. Despite the controversy, the party insists Nigerians must remain vigilant, politically active, and determined to protect their votes.
