Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has joined the growing number of Nigerians demanding the immediate release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Kanu has been held by the Department of State Services (DSS) since his controversial extradition from Kenya in 2021 during former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
Atiku’s statement came shortly after Omoyele Sowore, the 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), called on prominent leaders, including Peter Obi, Governor Charles Soludo, Governor Alex Otti, and Atiku himself, to lead a peaceful march to the Presidential Villa to demand Kanu’s release.
Responding via his social media platforms on Thursday, Atiku urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government to obey court orders that had previously granted Kanu bail. He condemned the continuous detention as an “open sore on the nation’s conscience” and an “assault on justice.”
“The continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu remains an open sore on our nation’s conscience and a stain on our belief in the rule of law,” Atiku stated. “I lend my voice in full support of the campaign led by Yele Sowore for his immediate release or due prosecution.”
Atiku’s intervention has intensified pressure on the Federal Government to uphold judicial rulings and demonstrate respect for the rule of law in handling Kanu’s case.
