The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government over unresolved demands, warning of an impending strike if action is not taken.
The decision followed the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Sunday, September 28, 2025, at the University of Abuja.
ASUU National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, confirmed the development in a statement personally signed and made available to reporters in Abuja.
According to the union, the Federal Government has continuously neglected Nigeria’s university system and ignored its longstanding demands.
“Accordingly, ASUU has given the Federal Government of Nigeria an ultimatum of fourteen (14) days within which to address these issues. If at the end of the fourteen-day ultimatum, the Federal Government fails to address these issues, the Union may have no option but to, first, embark on a two-week warning strike and thereafter, a total and indefinite strike,” the statement read.
The latest threat of industrial action rekindles fears of another prolonged shutdown in Nigerian public universities, which have in recent years suffered repeated strikes over issues ranging from funding, welfare, unpaid allowances, and poor infrastructure.
Unless quick intervention is made, the union may commence a two-week warning strike, followed by a total and indefinite strike that could again disrupt the academic calendar across the country.
