Panic gripped residents of Obinwanne Community in Njaba Local Government Area of Imo State on Thursday following a deadly explosion that claimed one life and left others injured.
According to viral clips circulating online, the victim—identified as Chinworeke Mmadu—was seen writhing in pain with his legs severely damaged. Residents at the scene alleged that he was attempting to plant a bomb in a nearby market when it detonated prematurely.
Eyewitnesses accused the victim of working with a suspected terror group linked to self-acclaimed Biafra agitators.
Confirming the incident in a statement, the spokesperson of the Imo State Police Command, Henry Okoye, said operatives swiftly mobilised to the scene after receiving a distress call.
“On receipt of the distress call, operatives from Njaba Divisional Headquarters immediately mobilised to the scene,” he said, adding that two passers-by who sustained injuries were taken to hospital for urgent treatment.
Okoye further disclosed that the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, Hamzat Abdulkadir, led operatives of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit to the site, where the area was swept and declared safe for public use.
The Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Aboki Danjuma, commiserated with the victims, wished the injured a speedy recovery, and reassured residents of the Command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property.
He also urged the public to remain calm, security-conscious, and report suspicious activities to security agencies.
