Nigerians can now breathe a sigh of relief as the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has suspended its planned nationwide strike.
The strike, which commenced on Wednesday, was called off on Thursday after the intervention of the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, who assured that the grievances of electricity workers would be addressed.
The decision was sealed in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by NUEE, the Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC), the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), and the Ministry of Power.
Electricity workers had earlier threatened an indefinite strike over unresolved welfare demands, such as the non-implementation of the national minimum wage and alleged casualisation of workers.
During Thursday’s meeting, which had Adelabu represented by senior officials of the ministry, both parties agreed to suspend the strike and allow discussions to continue.
According to the MoU:
- TCN and the Nigeria Integrated System Operator (NISO) will meet to evaluate the financial implications of the welfare report and prepare an implementation plan.
- The Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) will expedite action on tariff reviews for TCN and NISO.
- No worker will be victimised for taking part in the strike.
- Stakeholders will reconvene on October 6–7, 2025, to consider implementation of agreed resolutions.
The suspension eases public fears of a nationwide blackout while giving unions room to push for their demands through dialogue.
