Abuja — The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the long-awaited final list of candidates for the 2026 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections, officially setting the stage for a heated political showdown.
According to INEC, a total of 17 political parties successfully uploaded the particulars of their candidates — using Form EC9 — by the deadline of 6:00 pm on Monday, 11th August 2025. The initial list of aspirants was first made public on 18th August 2025 following the conduct of party primaries.
INEC confirmed that the period for withdrawal and substitution of candidates has ended, stressing that the publication of this final list closes the door to any changes.
What INEC is Saying
In a statement signed by Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman, Information & Voter Education Committee, the Commission revealed that the names of all validly nominated candidates — including their party affiliations, age, gender, and academic qualifications — have now been published on INEC’s official website and social media platforms for public access.
“With this publication, no further withdrawal or replacement of candidates will be allowed, except in the event of death of a candidate or running mate before Election Day as provided by Section 34(1) of the Electoral Act,” the statement read.
Election Date Confirmed
The much-anticipated FCT Area Council election will hold on Saturday, 21st February 2026, a date already stirring intense interest among residents, political parties, and analysts tracking the balance of power at the grassroots in Nigeria’s capital.
With 17 parties in the race and candidates already locked in, attention is now shifting to campaign strategies, alliances, and how parties intend to sway the electorate in what is expected to be a fierce contest.
