The political scene in Nigeria heated up over the weekend after activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, alleged that President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, were plotting to assassinate him.
But in a swift response, the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the FCT Minister, Lere Olayinka, dismissed the claims as baseless and described them as nothing more than “mind games.”
Speaking in a statement released in Abuja on Saturday, Olayinka insisted that Sowore’s allegations were a desperate attempt to “sustain his lifestyle” and should not be taken seriously.
“If there is any threat to the life of Sowore, it must be from those he has blackmailed. He should leave President Tinubu and the FCT Minister out of the impending repercussions of his lifestyle,” Olayinka said.
The minister’s aide further urged Sowore to focus on his ongoing criminal trial instead of throwing what he called “reckless allegations” at national leaders.
He also accused the activist of deploying “desperate tactics” with his recent criticisms of Minister Wike.
“All the noise he has been making about Wike in the last 48 hours is just part of his usual mind games. He knows the gravity of the charges against him,” Olayinka added.
According to Olayinka, Sowore’s claims of an assassination plot were not only unfounded but also a reflection of his troubled history of controversies.
He concluded by saying that Sowore’s posture of playing the victim was nothing more than “the last kick of a dying horse.”
As the war of words intensifies, Nigerians are left divided — with some questioning the seriousness of Sowore’s claims, while others see Olayinka’s rebuttal as a calculated attempt to silence the activist.
