Jubilation in Rivers: Fubara’s Loyalists Storm Government House as Emergency Rule Ends

Core loyalists of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, on Thursday stormed the Government House gate in Port Harcourt to await his arrival, following the suspension of the six-month emergency rule in the state.

Among those present was Victor Oko-Jumbo, former Speaker of the dissolved three-man House of Assembly loyal to Fubara, who led supporters drawn from across all 23 local government areas.

The excited crowd, made up of youths, elders, and women’s groups, brandished placards and chanted solidarity songs, declaring unwavering support for the governor.

One supporter was overheard shouting, “We have come to possess our possession,” while others danced with joy.

The atmosphere was nothing short of festive, with women in colourful attire, dancing troupes, drummers, and praise singers turning the Government House gate into a carnival ground.

Although the exact time of Governor Fubara’s arrival remained uncertain, many supporters expressed hope that he would stop to address them before heading inside.

The celebration came barely 24 hours after President Bola Tinubu announced the lifting of the emergency rule, reinstating Governor Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and members of the State House of Assembly.

Earlier, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd.), the outgoing Sole Administrator, officially handed over leadership of the state back to Fubara in a farewell ceremony.

With jubilation in the air, Rivers people now await their governor’s first official address since his reinstatement.
