As Nigeria gears up for the 2027 elections, the Nigerian Civil Situation Room is urging the National Assembly to expedite the legislative process for pending electoral reforms. This call was made during a press conference held in Abuja on Monday by Celestine Odo, Head of Programmes at ActionAid Nigeria.
Odo emphasized that the nation’s democracy is at a critical juncture, facing threats from a deepening government deficit. He stated, “The Situation Room calls on the National Assembly to finalize and pass into law pending reforms that will restore confidence in our elections and ultimately, our democracy.”
The Situation Room also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure credible elections in 2027. They expressed concerns over systemic corruption and called on authorities to address this issue.
“With off-cycle governorship elections taking place in Anambra, Ekiti, and Osun states before the general elections, INEC must conduct free, fair, and credible elections that meet international standards,” Odo added.
He warned that while the endurance of civil rule is commendable, systemic corruption, cultural fragmentation, and governance deficits pose significant threats to democratic consolidation. Odo concluded, “This administration’s legacy will hinge on its ability to address economic inequality, restore electoral integrity, and foster inclusive governance.”
In related news, the Situation Room criticized the Senate for the suspension of Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, a first-time senator from the Peoples Democratic Party. Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended on March 6, 2025, for six months, a decision that has faced legal challenges without resolution. The Situation Room described the denial of her resumption as a serious threat to the rule of law.
