The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Nigerian government regarding unresolved issues affecting non-academic staff in universities.
In a letter dated September 12, 2025, the unions condemned the “unjust” disbursement of earned allowances to university staff, the non-payment of outstanding allowances, and other unresolved matters.
The letter, signed by SSANU President Muhammed Ibrahim and NASU General Secretary Peters Adeyemi, reminded Minister of Education Tunji Alausa of a previous correspondence from the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of NASU and SSANU dated June 18, 2025. This letter emphasized the urgent need for intervention in outstanding labor matters affecting their members.
The unions noted that the Minister convened a meeting with the JAC on July 4, 2025, to address these issues. However, they stated that the problems remain unresolved.
Key issues highlighted in the letter include:
- Unjust disbursement of N50 billion in earned allowances
- Non-payment of outstanding withheld salaries
- 25/35% salary increments
- Renegotiation of the 2009 FGN and NASU/SSANU agreements
The unions have formally notified the government of a seven-day period, effective from September 15, 2025, to address their concerns. If these issues are not resolved, members will initiate a series of industrial actions, including strikes.
The unions expressed frustration over the lack of progress since the July meeting and the government’s failure to engage with non-teaching staff unions, despite having concluded negotiations with the Academic Staff Union.
In light of the ongoing issues and the government’s inaction, SSANU and NASU are prepared to take necessary steps to ensure their demands are met.
