US Ranked Among Least Peaceful Countries in 2025: What It Means for Travelers

The United States has been ranked among the least peaceful countries in the world according to the 2025 Global Peace Index (GPI), igniting discussions across various platforms.

The GPI, which evaluates crime, conflict, and military expenditures in over 160 nations, placed the US near the bottom of the list, ranking it 128th out of 163 countries. This is a significant decline from its 2012 position, where it was ranked 88th out of 153 countries.

This drop in ranking is attributed to factors such as violent demonstrations, political unrest, and high levels of weapons imports.

In addition to the GPI findings, a recent report from the Congressional Research Service revealed that international arrivals at US borders decreased by 2.4 percent in 2024. This decline is partly linked to tariffs imposed by former President Donald Trump, which led to a travel boycott from Canada, adversely affecting tourism in several states.

Moreover, new visa application processes have been introduced, requiring nonimmigrant visa applicants to attend in-person interviews at US embassies or consulates, and to provide a comprehensive list of their social media handles from the past five years. These measures are part of broader efforts to enhance immigration controls and bolster national security.
