A Nigerian woman, Nenye Uzowulu, has urged parents to carefully evaluate the schools they choose for their children, stating that school fees they struggle to pay are no longer regular tuition but rather ‘ransom.’
Uzowulu shared her perspective on Facebook on Monday, warning parents against succumbing to pressure from private school owners regarding escalating fees. She wrote, ‘Any school fees you struggle to pay is no longer school fees but ransom! Take your kids to where you can afford. Same as HouseRent.’
Explaining her viewpoint, Uzowulu highlighted the plight of a woman who is perpetually in debt, taking loans to cover her children’s school fees. ‘I know a woman who is living in debt now. She will always collect loans to pay school fees. Like what kind of mother are you?’ she questioned.
Her comments come at a time of heated discussions surrounding tuition increases in private schools. Enugu-based school proprietor, Gladys Ajaero, defended the hikes, attributing them to economic realities rather than exploitation or greed. In an interview with Arise TV, Mrs. Ajaero explained that the rising costs of essential services and materials have compelled many private institutions to raise their tuition fees.
Uzowulu’s post has ignited widespread reactions online, with many users sharing their thoughts. Usonwa Chinaemerem Miracle commented, ‘I totally agree. Find a comfortable place that won’t place unnecessary strains and pressure on you and yours and settle there.’ Others echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the importance of financial stability when choosing educational institutions.
As the debate continues, it is clear that the issue of rising school fees is affecting many families across Nigeria.
