The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has reiterated its unwavering commitment to the struggle for Biafra’s independence from Nigeria. In a statement released on Sunday, the group’s leader, Comrade Uchenna Madu, emphasized that the self-determination movement will persist through non-violent means.
As MASSOB celebrates its 24th anniversary, marking the formation of the group on September 13, 1999, Madu paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the pursuit of Biafra, allegedly at the hands of Nigerian security forces. He stated, “Today, we remember our brothers and sisters whose lives were cut short because of Biafra.”
Madu accused the armed security agents of subjecting non-violent MASSOB members to severe oppression, leading to their deaths. He expressed solidarity with the families of fallen activists, noting that many are still traumatized or have passed away from the shock of their losses.
He declared, “We are committedly, consistently and uncompromisingly agitating for an independent state of Biafra from Nigeria,” highlighting that Biafra represents a solution to the various forms of oppression faced by the Igbo people, including political, economic, and social injustices.
Madu criticized the current state of Nigeria, stating that true nationhood remains unachieved and that peace, justice, and equity are still elusive. He argued that the Nigerian government fears Biafra because it symbolizes the truth of their injustices.
Concluding his statement, Madu affirmed that the 24 years of MASSOB’s struggle for freedom will not be compromised or corrupted.
