Political activist Timi Frank has issued a stark warning to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), urging immediate reforms ahead of the 2027 elections to ensure they are free, fair, and credible.
Speaking from Abuja, Frank cautioned that Nigeria could face a situation similar to Nepal’s recent unrest if the upcoming general elections lack credibility. He emphasized the need for urgent reforms and ethical leadership from electoral and security institutions to mitigate the risk of violence and political instability reminiscent of the ENDSARS protests of 2020.
As a former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Frank has called on U.S. President Donald Trump and the international community to pressure the Nigerian government, particularly INEC and the National Assembly, to prioritize electoral reforms. He stressed that without these reforms, free and fair elections in 2027 would be unattainable.
Additionally, Frank advocated for the appointment of a new INEC chairman with proven integrity, as Mahmood Yakubu’s tenure is nearing its end. He stated, “Let the U.S. impose stiffer sanctions on judges, justices, and INEC officials who may compromise the electoral process, as we support Donald Trump’s position on fostering true democracy across Africa.”
Frank also called for security agencies to remain unbiased and refrain from their historical role in rigging elections for the ruling party, insisting they must protect voters and prevent political violence. He warned that failure to act could push Nigeria into a situation even worse than Nepal’s recent unrest, given the country’s ongoing challenges with poverty and tyranny.
