Gbenga Daniel Accused of Betraying APC in Ogun By-election

Senator Gbenga Daniel, representing Ogun East, has come under fire for allegedly instructing his supporters to vote for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Bolarinwa Oluwole, during the recent by-election held on August 16 in Ogun State.

The by-election, conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), was aimed at filling the vacancy left by the late Adewunmi Onanuga in January. An insider from the All Progressives Congress (APC) disclosed to The Cable that just days before the election, Daniel sent WhatsApp messages to his loyalists urging them to support Oluwole over the APC candidate, Adesola Elegbeji.

According to the APC source, Daniel, who was out of the country at the time, encouraged his allies to back the PDP, reminiscent of their actions in the previous election, and promised to provide full support upon his return.

The insider revealed that Daniel later deleted the WhatsApp message, claiming it was generated by AI, which sparked confrontations with APC leaders. The message reportedly stated, “Please mobilise all our people to vote the same way as before. I will support, as always, PDP.”

APC leaders in Ogun expressed alarm upon learning of Daniel’s instructions to his supporters, labeling it a clear case of his “consistent betrayal” of the party. Sources indicated that this is not the first instance of Daniel supporting the PDP, as he had previously backed the party during the 2023 governorship election, working against the APC despite being one of its most prominent figures in Ogun.
