A 20-member committee has been inaugurated to plan the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) congress in Cross River State.
The committee is led by former Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Zana Akpagu. The inauguration took place on Friday at the party’s secretariat in Calabar, conducted by the state party chairman, Vena Ikem, in the presence of key stakeholders.
Chairman Ikem described the congress committee as “a galaxy of stars,” noting that it reflects the quality of individuals still available within the party in the state. He further stated that the PDP would capitalize on the missteps of the APC-led administration in Cross River to turn them into electoral gains.
Speaking on the party’s strategy, Ikem said, “We need to focus our energy on what we are doing in our state, take advantage of the mistakes of APC, reposition our party and transform it to victory. We have total control of the northern senatorial district and will remain impenetrable. What we need is another senatorial district and we are gone.”
He also highlighted the credibility of PDP members, stressing that the challenges facing the party at the national level are “superficial” and would soon pass. He added, “PDP remains a platform for those with conviction and courage to serve, and we encourage our members to actively engage at all levels to ensure the party’s vision is realized.”
In response, Prof. Zana Akpagu affirmed the committee’s commitment to its responsibilities, saying, “We wholeheartedly accept this responsibility. We know the import of this task and we are not taking this assignment for granted.” He assured stakeholders of the committee’s dedication, stating, “Our focus is on conducting a free, fair, and transparent congress. Every step we take will reflect accountability and commitment to strengthening our party in Cross River State.”
Another committee member, Mrs. Ngozi Eyo, remarked, “We are ready to mobilize, consult widely, and ensure that the congress reflects the collective will of our party members. This is a historic opportunity to set a benchmark for future PDP activities.”
