The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned the decision of the National Assembly to prevent Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, from resuming her seat after serving a six-month suspension imposed by the Senate leadership.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by its spokesperson, Debo Ologunagba, the opposition party accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio, the All Progressives Congress (APC), and the federal government of deliberately attempting to deny the people of Kogi Central their constitutional right to representation.
Ologunagba described the move as a calculated plot to stifle opposition voices and deepen what he called “creeping totalitarianism” under the APC-led administration.
“The attempt to use the National Assembly establishment against an elected Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in gross violation of the Constitution and Senate rules is provocative and poses a grave danger to democracy,” the PDP stated.
The party further alleged that the action also represents an attack on women’s rights, citing past allegations of harassment against women reportedly linked to Senate President Akpabio.
The PDP demanded that the Clerk of the National Assembly withdraw the letter barring Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan and allow her to resume her duties without further obstruction.
It also called on the international community, rights groups, and pro-democracy institutions to speak out against what it described as a renewed attack on democracy.
The PDP urged Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to ignore the Clerk’s directive and prepare to resume her seat in the Senate following the expiration of her suspension.
