The Oyo State Police Command has achieved a breakthrough in its fight against armed robbery after recovering a Toyota Corolla Sport snatched from an e-hailing driver in Ibadan.
Police spokesperson, Osifeso Adewale, confirmed the development in a statement on Monday. He revealed that the vehicle, with registration number LSR 893CX, was traced and retrieved following a targeted anti-robbery operation.
According to Adewale, the recovery is particularly significant as it comes at a time when cases of ride-hailing drivers being robbed at gunpoint have been on the rise across the state.
“In recent weeks, there has been an alarming increase in reports of armed robbers attacking Uber and other e-hailing drivers at gunpoint, leading to stolen vehicles and cash,” he stated.
The case, initially handled at the Iyaganku Divisional Police Headquarters, was later transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a deeper probe.
Through surveillance and tracking, the Anti-Robbery Squad successfully located and recovered the stolen Toyota Corolla.
Reacting to the breakthrough, the Oyo State Commissioner of Police emphasized that the recovery reflects the command’s proactive approach to crime prevention.
“The recovery of the stolen vehicle underscores our determination to confront crime head-on. We are committed to protecting lives and property and ensuring perpetrators face justice,” the CP said.
The police command also urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities promptly, as efforts to secure the state continue.
