In a bold response to recent remarks by his predecessor, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, Governor Uba Sani has declared that he will not be distracted by personal attacks or political labels.
Speaking on TVC’s Politics on Sunday, El-Rufai’s successor dismissed insinuations that he was merely following the footsteps of his predecessor. El-Rufai had earlier described Sani as “my boy” and insisted they were not friends.
Governor Sani, however, clarified his political journey, noting that President Bola Tinubu and late human rights lawyer, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, remain his greatest mentors.
“I don’t think it is necessary to respond to that comment. Even President Bola Tinubu—I met him in 1994 at Beko Ransome-Kuti’s house. Gani Fawehinmi was like a father to me during the struggle; I lived in his house. My focus is on Kaduna. I don’t talk about individuals; my eyes are on the ball,” he stressed.
Addressing allegations that his administration had been paying ransoms to bandits, the governor dismissed the claims as “political propaganda,” insisting that community-driven non-kinetic measures were being adopted alongside military action to restore peace, especially in Birnin Gwari.
“Some politicians are playing with insecurity. We are not paying ransom to any bandit. The truth is, our community leaders came up with non-kinetic ideas, and we supported them. Not a dime has been paid. Anyone suggesting otherwise is misleading the public,” Sani affirmed.
On the recent violent disruption of an opposition transition committee meeting in Kaduna, Governor Sani distanced himself from the incident and called for calm, stressing that he remains a defender of democracy and the rule of law.
“As someone who has been detained five times fighting for justice, I will never be part of anything aimed at stopping anyone’s political activities,” he maintained.
With Kaduna still battling insecurity and political tension, Sani’s remarks signal a strong desire to chart an independent path while tackling challenges with both firmness and collaboration.
