A shocking case of mob violence has rocked Edo State after a 41-year-old furniture maker, Mr. Aruna Imuekheme, was allegedly beaten to death by suspected gang members following a dispute over a completed job.
The incident occurred on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at the victim’s workshop along Old Ahor Road, Eyean, in Uhunmwode Local Government Area.
Dispute Over Furniture Job
According to the victim’s brother, Mr. Lukeman Imuekheme, the conflict began on Friday, September 5, when a client returned to demand that chairs upholstered six months earlier be fixed again, claiming the materials had compressed.
“My brother explained that the agreement was only to re-cover the chairs with fabric, not replace the foam,” Lukeman said. Though the disagreement was resolved at first, tensions escalated when the client allegedly mobilized reinforcements.
Attack by Armed Gang
On Saturday, a group of at least 11 men stormed the workshop—eight arriving first, followed by three others in an oxblood-coloured Toyota Venza SUV. Eyewitnesses reported that the men attempted to cart away tools but were resisted by apprentices and locals.
Mr. Imuekheme, who had been away on another job, rushed back after being alerted. Upon arrival, he was attacked with dangerous weapons by the gang.
Denied Medical Care
Despite frantic efforts, the victim was rejected by multiple hospitals, including Eyean Primary Health Centre and Narrow Way Hospital, before being taken to Edo Specialist Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead at 12:08 p.m. His remains are now at Stella Obasanjo Mortuary, Benin City.
Police Response and Family Appeal
The Edo State Police Command confirmed the arrest of three suspects, while investigations continue. The grieving family has appealed to both the state government and law enforcement for justice.
“We want fairness, equity, and justice. These boys acted like cultists with the kind of weapons they carried,” Lukeman said, urging swift intervention from the Edo State Special Security Squad.
The tragic killing has sparked outrage in the community, with many demanding stronger measures against cultism and violent gangs in Edo State.
