Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of employing the same repressive strategies allegedly used by former President Muhammadu Buhari to silence dissent.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Hard Copy programme, Sowore said the government was recycling the 2019 strategy that led to his arrest during the planned Revolution Now protests.
“I think it is just a recycling of the same strategy used by the Buhari regime in 2019 when I was arrested… I was equally accused of terrorism financing. That was how the Buhari government obtained a 45-day detention order against me,” he said.
Sowore dismissed past allegations of terrorism financing, money laundering, and cybercrime as politically motivated and baseless, insisting the government had failed to present credible evidence in court.
“They claim I was cyberbullying the president, but when asked to provide evidence, they ran away,” he added.
The activist argued that the administration’s real strategy was to “blackball” him with endless accusations that never stand in court, thereby distracting him from his activism.
Court Order on Bank Accounts
Sowore also condemned a recent court order directing the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to access his bank account details, describing it as unlawful and a violation of his fundamental rights.
“My GTB account is still frozen illegally by the DSS, and I’m in court over it. Citizens must resist being taken for granted by state authorities,” he insisted.
Forgery Allegation
He further rejected claims of forging a police wireless message, saying the accusation lacked merit.
“You can only forge a document if it emanated from a different person masquerading as another. A watermark does not make a document forged,” Sowore clarified.
DSS vs Sowore on 𝕏
The interview came shortly before the DSS petitioned social media platform X (formerly Twitter), demanding Sowore’s account be deactivated within 24 hours.
The DSS alleged that a tweet by Sowore, which used strong language against President Tinubu, amounted to incitement and could spark unrest among Nigerians.
This latest face-off has once again reignited debates over free speech, digital censorship, and state repression in Nigeria.
