Ghana vs MultiChoice: DSTV Faces License Suspension as Gov’t Threatens Shutdown Over Price Hike Dispute!

A storm is brewing between the Government of Ghana and South African satellite television giant, MultiChoice, over DSTV subscription prices.

In early August 2025, Ghana’s Minister of Communications, Samuel Nartey George, issued a stern ultimatum: MultiChoice must slash subscription fees by 30% before August 7 or risk losing its broadcasting license. The directive came with a hefty daily fine of GHC 10,000 for any delay in compliance.

Initially, the Minister announced what seemed to be a breakthrough—MultiChoice had reportedly agreed to reduce prices after submitting long-requested data detailing bouquet structures, taxes, and regional comparisons. The news was welcomed across Ghana, with many celebrating a long-awaited victory for consumers.

But the joy was short-lived. MultiChoice swiftly released a statement denying any agreement with the government, insisting it had not committed to lowering prices. The company emphasized ongoing dialogue but cautioned against decisions that could “jeopardize the viability of the DSTV service.”

The Minister wasted no time firing back. Taking to social media, he accused MultiChoice of “disrespecting Ghanaians” and vowed to enforce the shutdown order.

“Let me be clear—I will not continue tolerating this disrespect. If MultiChoice is unwilling to honor its earlier position on price reduction, we will move ahead with enforcement tomorrow. No company is above the law,” George declared.

The clash has fueled heated debate across the country. Critics argue that DSTV’s 15% price increase in April was unjustified, especially since the Ghanaian cedi has strengthened significantly this year. Comparisons with other African markets show that Ghanaian subscribers are paying disproportionately higher rates.

As the deadline looms, uncertainty grips both consumers and the company. Will MultiChoice back down to keep its Ghanaian operations alive, or will the government carry out its threat and shut down DSTV?
