UYO, Nigeria – Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has hinted that newcomers Felix Agu and Benjamin Fredrick could be handed starting spots in Saturday’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Rwanda.
Both players made their international debuts in May during the Unity Cup clash with Jamaica, and their performances have since impressed the coaching staff.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday, Chelle revealed that his tactical plan is ready and that the two young stars are firmly in contention.
“I have a plan in my head, I need to think about this game. Every player in this team can play at every moment – during the game, before the game, after the game,” Chelle said.
“They deserve to be here, they deserve to play this game and, like the captain said, this is an honour for them.”
Agu faces stiff competition for a fullback role from Ola Aina, Bright Osayi-Samuel, and Bruno Onyemaechi, while Fredrick contends with experienced defenders William Troost-Ekong, Calvin Bassey, and Chidozie Awaziem.
Nigeria, currently chasing vital points in Group C, are aiming for victory in Uyo before a tough trip to Bloemfontein to face group leaders South Africa next week.
