Fresh controversy has erupted ahead of South African music star Tyla’s scheduled performance in Lagos after social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), vowed to stop the concert over ongoing xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa.
In a video shared on his official Facebook page on Thursday, VDM called on the event organizers to cancel the planned show, insisting that the singer should not be allowed to profit from Nigerian fans while many Nigerians continue to face reported hostility in South Africa.
The activist linked his opposition to the concert to the situation involving Chidinma Adetshina, who is reportedly battling deportation proceedings in a South African court, arguing that the timing of the event has angered many Nigerians.
“There will be no Tyla concert in Nigeria. It is not happening,” VDM declared.
Addressing the organizers directly, he warned that proceeding with the event could lead to protests at the venue.
“This is a warning to the organizers and the show promoters bringing Tyla to Nigeria. That show is not happening. If you go ahead with that show, we will come to the venue and we will bring the show down,” he said.
According to VDM, many Nigerians believe it is inappropriate for South African entertainers to benefit from the Nigerian market while xenophobic attacks and discrimination against Nigerians remain a source of concern.
The latest development follows the release of Tyla’s world tour schedule, which includes a concert in Lagos on December 22, 2026. Since the announcement, calls for a boycott of the event have continued to spread across social media, with some Nigerians urging organizers to reconsider the show.
As of the time of this report, neither Tyla nor her management has publicly responded to the comments made by VDM or the growing calls for a boycott.
The controversy is expected to intensify discussions around entertainment, diplomacy, and the long-running concerns over the treatment of Nigerians living in South Africa.
