Fresh political tension has emerged as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the Federal Government of targeting former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, warning that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration should be held responsible if anything happens to the former governor.
The allegation was made by the ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, during an interview on Symfoni TV, where he questioned the circumstances surrounding El-Rufai’s reported detention.
According to Abdullahi, the issue goes beyond law enforcement and has become a political matter. He argued that any allegations against El-Rufai should be resolved through the courts, insisting that only the judiciary has the authority to determine whether an individual is guilty or innocent of any offense.
The ADC spokesman claimed that prolonging El-Rufai’s detention, rather than allowing due legal process to take its course, raises serious concerns about political interference. He alleged that the move was aimed at preventing the former Kaduna governor from participating in political activities and strengthening the opposition ahead of future elections.
“If anything happens to El-Rufai while he remains in state custody, President Bola Tinubu and his administration will bear full responsibility,” Abdullahi stated.
He further maintained that El-Rufai should not be treated as guilty without a court ruling, stressing that the principles of justice and the rule of law must be respected regardless of political affiliation.
Abdullahi also recalled El-Rufai’s role during the political events leading to Tinubu’s emergence as president, claiming the former governor strongly supported Tinubu at a time when, according to him, several members of the previous administration were reluctant to do so.
The comments have sparked renewed political debate, with supporters and critics expressing differing views over the allegations and the broader state of opposition politics in Nigeria.
As of the time of this report, the Presidency and relevant security authorities had not publicly responded to the specific claims made by the ADC spokesperson, and the allegations remain the position of the opposition party.
