A United States-based lobbying firm, Von Batten-Montague-York, has launched a fresh criticism of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing him as a threat to Nigeria’s stability and to American interests in the West African region.
The statement, released on the firm’s official X account, comes amid renewed discussions in the United States over Nigeria’s security situation and governance. The lobbying firm was reportedly retained by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar under a 12-month contract valued at $1.2 million.
Reacting to remarks reportedly made by US Congressman John James, who raised concerns about terrorism in Nigeria before the United States Congress, the firm praised the lawmaker for drawing international attention to the country’s security challenges.
According to the statement, the firm thanked the congressman for highlighting allegations that “tens of thousands of Nigerians have been slaughtered by terrorists ignored or enabled by the Nigerian government.”
The lobbying firm further claimed that more members of the US Congress were beginning to speak out against the Tinubu administration as they became aware of various allegations involving governance and national security.
Among the claims contained in the statement were allegations of corruption, drug trafficking, disregard for the rule of law and interference with the judiciary. The firm also alleged that political institutions were being manipulated to weaken opposition parties ahead of Nigeria’s next presidential election.
In one of its strongest remarks, the lobbying group stated that portraying President Tinubu as an ally of US President Donald Trump would not prevent continued criticism from international stakeholders.
“President Bola Tinubu can continue to falsely insinuate that he is now President Donald Trump’s best friend. That will achieve nothing, and it will not stop us from making it clear that President Tinubu is a clear and present threat to the stability of Nigeria and a threat to U.S. interests in Nigeria and the greater region,” the statement said.
As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian Presidency had not publicly responded to the latest allegations made by the lobbying firm. The allegations remain claims by the organization and have not been independently verified.
