African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate and activist Omoyele Sowore has launched a scathing attack on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), accusing the anti-graft agency of losing focus and failing to tackle major corruption cases in Nigeria.

Sowore made the remarks in a post shared on his verified X account on Thursday while reacting to the EFCC’s invitation of activists Peter Akah and Precious Oruche, popularly known as “Mama Pee,” over allegations relating to the abuse of the naira.

The development has sparked fresh debate on social media, with many Nigerians expressing differing opinions about the role and priorities of the country’s leading anti-corruption agency.

In his statement, Sowore described the EFCC as an institution that has become a symbol of “joblessness and misplaced priorities,” arguing that its attention appears to be shifting away from tackling high-profile financial crimes.

According to him, the agency was established to investigate and prosecute offences such as grand corruption, public asset theft, money laundering, procurement fraud and the looting of public funds. He questioned why, in his view, the commission was dedicating resources to cases involving activists instead of pursuing individuals allegedly responsible for large-scale economic crimes.

“The real economic and financial criminals appear to be beyond its reach, while the agency increasingly devotes its energy to pursuing easier targets,” Sowore stated.

He further argued that focusing on cases he described as less significant could undermine public confidence in the EFCC’s core mandate of fighting corruption.

The comments came shortly after the commission invited Peter Akah and Precious Oruche to provide clarifications over allegations of naira abuse, a move that has generated widespread public discussion.

While the EFCC has consistently maintained that it enforces all laws within its jurisdiction, regardless of the status of those involved, Sowore’s latest criticism is expected to fuel renewed conversations about the agency’s priorities and effectiveness in combating corruption.

As the debate continues, many Nigerians are closely watching how the commission responds to growing public scrutiny over its enforcement strategies and ongoing investigations.
