The Lagos State Government has intensified its campaign against environmental pollution with the arrest of 12 suspected offenders during fresh sanitation enforcement operations carried out across Lagos Island, Yaba and Ikorodu.

The coordinated exercise, led by the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) in partnership with the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) Corps, is part of the state’s ongoing effort to curb indiscriminate waste disposal, illegal scavenging and other environmental violations.

According to LAWMA’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the agency’s Project WISE Enforcement Team arrested 11 suspects during surveillance operations around Lagos Island and the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) area. The suspects were allegedly caught engaging in offences ranging from improper waste disposal to illegal scavenging, all of which violate Lagos State environmental regulations.

Gbadegesin confirmed that the suspects have been taken into custody and will be prosecuted in accordance with the state’s environmental laws, stressing that the government remains committed to enforcing sanitation standards across Lagos.

In a separate operation in Ikorodu, KAI Corps operatives arrested a school security guard after a resident reportedly caught him dumping refuse into a drainage channel outside the school where he worked. Authorities said the suspect will also face prosecution for violating environmental laws.

The LAWMA boss praised the resident whose report led to the arrest, describing the action as a strong example of how public participation can help protect the environment. He encouraged Lagos residents to report environmental offenders through official government channels, emphasizing that keeping the city clean is a collective responsibility.

Gbadegesin also warned against dumping refuse into drainage systems, road medians, sidewalks and other unauthorized locations, noting that such practices contribute to blocked drains, flooding, environmental degradation and serious public health risks.

He assured residents that surveillance and enforcement exercises would continue across the state, with environmental and security agencies working together to identify and prosecute offenders. He also urged households, businesses and institutions to use only approved Private Sector Participants (PSPs) for waste collection and comply with proper waste disposal guidelines.
