Fresh political conversations have emerged ahead of the 2027 general election after Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) vice-presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, declared that Northern leaders are ready to strengthen political cooperation with the South-East in the spirit of unity and national reconciliation.
Speaking during an interview with BBC Igbo, the former Kano State governor reflected on Nigeria’s political history, insisting that forgiveness and collaboration have always been essential to the country’s progress. His remarks have already sparked discussions across the political landscape as parties continue to build alliances ahead of the next presidential election.
Kwankwaso recalled that even after the Nigerian Civil War ended in 1970, political leaders from the North chose reconciliation over division. He pointed to historical alliances between the Northern People’s Congress and the National Council of Nigerian Citizens, led by Nnamdi Azikiwe, as examples of political cooperation that helped strengthen national unity.
He also highlighted how former Vice President Alex Ekwueme enjoyed strong support from Northern political leaders, describing him as a respected ally whose relationship with the region remained cordial throughout his lifetime.
According to Kwankwaso, another significant example was the decision by leaders of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) to welcome former Biafran leader Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu back into mainstream politics after the civil war. Ojukwu later contested for the Senate, demonstrating that reconciliation was possible despite the nation’s painful history.
The NDC vice-presidential candidate stressed that Nigeria cannot continue to be divided by ethnic or religious differences if it hopes to achieve meaningful development. He maintained that politics should focus on competence, partnership and nation-building rather than regional or religious sentiments.
Kwankwaso further clarified that renewed cooperation with the South-East does not amount to hostility toward the South-West or any other geopolitical zone. Instead, he said every region remains an important partner in building a stronger Nigeria.
As preparations for the 2027 elections intensify, Kwankwaso’s call for unity and forgiveness is expected to fuel fresh debate about political alliances, national integration and the future direction of Nigeria’s democracy.
