The Federal Government has directed regulators to investigate global technology giants Google, Meta and X over allegations that they have been exploiting Nigerian news content without providing fair compensation to local media organisations.
The directive, issued by President Bola Tinubu, comes amid growing concerns over the relationship between digital platforms and news publishers, with media stakeholders arguing that technology companies generate significant revenue from journalistic content while publishers receive little financial benefit.
According to the Presidency, the planned investigation will examine whether the operations of the digital platforms comply with Nigerian laws governing competition, intellectual property and the country’s digital economy.
Government officials said the probe will focus on how news content produced by Nigerian media organisations is displayed, distributed and monetised across the platforms, as well as whether local publishers are being treated fairly.
The move follows similar actions in several countries where governments have pushed major technology companies to negotiate licensing agreements and revenue-sharing arrangements with news publishers.
Industry observers say the outcome of the investigation could influence future regulations governing digital platforms in Nigeria, particularly as online news consumption continues to grow.
Media organisations have long argued that while platforms such as Google, Meta and X drive traffic to news websites, they also benefit commercially from headlines, snippets and other journalistic content without adequately rewarding the publishers that produce the original reports.
Supporters of the probe believe it could strengthen Nigeria’s media industry by ensuring local publishers receive fair value for their content, while critics have cautioned that any regulatory action should strike a balance between protecting intellectual property rights and preserving an open digital ecosystem.
The investigation is also expected to examine broader issues relating to competition, digital advertising and the sustainability of Nigeria’s news industry in an increasingly platform-driven media landscape.
As regulators begin their review, stakeholders across the technology and media sectors are expected to closely monitor developments, with many anticipating that the findings could shape future digital content policies and the relationship between global technology firms and Nigerian publishers.
