Fresh criticism has been directed at President Bola Tinubu’s administration after the National Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, claimed that despite increased government revenue, millions of Nigerians are becoming poorer. His remarks have reignited debate over the impact of the Federal Government’s economic reforms on ordinary citizens.
Speaking during a televised interview, Baba-Ahmed argued that key policy decisions, particularly the removal of fuel subsidy, were introduced without adequate planning or detailed assessments. According to him, reforms of such magnitude should have been preceded by comprehensive evaluations of their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and potential risks to the economy and the people.
The PRP chairman maintained that while the government has defended its reforms as necessary for long-term economic stability, many Nigerians are struggling with soaring living costs, worsening insecurity, and persistent hardship. He alleged that the benefits of increased national revenue have not translated into improved living conditions for the average citizen.
Baba-Ahmed also dismissed claims that the opposition seeks to remove the current administration through unconstitutional means. Instead, he stressed that political change should only come through democratic elections, insisting that the opposition’s objective is to challenge the ruling party at the ballot box in 2027.
He further expressed disappointment that President Tinubu, whom he described as a leader with strong political credentials, had not used his mandate to confront long-standing national challenges such as insecurity, corruption, and the rising cost of living.
The Federal Government has consistently defended its economic agenda, arguing that reforms including fuel subsidy removal and foreign exchange adjustments are difficult but essential measures to stabilize the economy and attract long-term investment.
As economic pressures continue to dominate public discourse, Baba-Ahmed’s comments have added fresh momentum to the debate over whether Nigeria’s reform agenda is delivering the promised benefits. With the 2027 elections drawing closer, the economy is expected to remain one of the defining issues in the nation’s political conversation.
