What appeared to be a dream opportunity to own a luxury vehicle from the United States has now become the centre of a high-profile fraud investigation after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested a Nigerian-American over an alleged cross-border vehicle import scheme involving more than $320,000.

According to the anti-graft agency, Adegoke Oluwatobi Adams was taken into custody by operatives of the EFCC’s Ilorin Zonal Directorate over allegations of criminal breach of trust and obtaining money under false pretences. Investigators claim the suspect is connected to a syndicate that allegedly targeted Nigerians seeking to import premium vehicles from overseas.

The investigation suggests that prospective buyers were promised the purchase and shipment of luxury automobiles after making substantial payments. At the centre of the allegations is a 2024 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG that was reportedly advertised while Adams was residing in the United States. Authorities allege that photographs of the vehicle were shared with interested buyers alongside assurances that delivery would follow once payment was completed.

The EFCC stated that two complainants allegedly transferred a combined total exceeding $320,000 for the same vehicle. One victim is said to have paid $145,000 through an intermediary, while another reportedly transferred $175,000 under similar arrangements. Investigators are working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the transactions and whether additional victims may have been affected.

The commission further disclosed that preliminary inquiries uncovered information about an alleged previous criminal record linked to Adams in the United States involving the unlawful acquisition of vehicles. However, those claims remain part of the ongoing investigation.

Authorities confirmed that the suspect was arrested shortly after returning to Nigeria and is currently being questioned. The EFCC says he will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations.

The case serves as another reminder of the risks associated with international vehicle purchases conducted without thorough verification. Experts continue to advise buyers to confirm the legitimacy of dealers, inspect documentation carefully, and avoid making large payments without adequate safeguards. As investigations continue, the allegations remain subject to judicial determination.
