With the countdown to Nigeria’s 2027 general election gradually gathering pace, supporters of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi have unveiled an ambitious nationwide mobilisation campaign that could reshape the political conversation across the country.

The newly inaugurated support group, known as Peter Obi Volunteers and operating under the banner “New Ideas, New Nigeria!”, officially launched its operations in Abuja with a mission to expand grassroots participation and strengthen confidence in the electoral process. At the heart of the initiative is an eye-catching target: mobilising up to 10 million new voters before the next presidential election.

National Chairman Ogbuefi Chukwudile Okoye revealed that the organisation is building structures across all 774 local government areas in Nigeria, aiming to encourage voter registration, civic participation and community engagement. According to him, the movement welcomes Nigerians from every background, regardless of political affiliation, ethnicity, religion or gender.

One of the campaign’s flagship initiatives is the “10+ Project,” under which every volunteer is encouraged to help register at least 10 eligible voters. If successful, organisers believe the programme could significantly increase voter participation and strengthen democratic engagement nationwide.

Beyond voter mobilisation, the group also plans to focus on election monitoring and voter protection, seeking to ensure that polling unit results are accurately reflected in official declarations. The initiative underscores growing interest among civic groups in promoting transparency and accountability during elections.

Okoye, who said he has known Peter Obi for approximately four decades, described the former Anambra State governor as a leader with integrity and credibility. He recalled their shared roots in Onitsha and praised Obi’s public service record as a source of inspiration for many supporters.

While the effectiveness of the initiative will ultimately be tested during the electoral cycle, the launch signals an early and organised effort to energise grassroots participation ahead of 2027. As political campaigns continue to evolve, voter mobilisation strategies like this may play a significant role in shaping Nigeria’s democratic landscape.
