Growing heaps of refuse across parts of Lagos have sparked concern among residents, prompting Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to order an immediate intensification of waste evacuation efforts across the state. The move comes as authorities seek to restore cleanliness and reassure citizens that the sanitation challenge is temporary.

In a statement issued through the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, the Lagos State Government acknowledged public complaints over the accumulation of waste and confirmed that the matter has received urgent attention from the highest levels of government.

Governor Sanwo-Olu reportedly directed all relevant agencies and waste management service providers to operate around the clock to clear refuse from affected communities. Additional resources have also been deployed to accelerate evacuation efforts and improve the efficiency of waste collection and disposal operations.

Key environmental agencies, including the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), and the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), have been instructed to strengthen their response as part of a coordinated cleanup strategy.

Officials noted that Lagos, one of Africa’s largest and fastest-growing cities, generates approximately 13,000 tonnes of waste every day. While such volume presents operational challenges, the government maintains that it has both the capacity and determination to address the backlog and reinforce long-term waste management systems.

According to the statement, noticeable progress has already been recorded in several locations, with further improvements expected in the coming days. The administration also emphasized its continued investment in environmental sustainability, urban renewal, and infrastructure aimed at creating a cleaner and healthier city.

Residents, market associations, business owners, and community leaders have been urged to support the ongoing efforts by disposing of waste responsibly and avoiding practices that block drainage channels, roads, or designated collection points.

As cleanup operations intensify, the government insists that the current situation will not be allowed to persist and has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining safe, sanitary, and environmentally sustainable communities throughout Lagos State.
